Orthopedic Stem Cell Therapy
Orthopedic Stem Cell Therapy Overview
Orthopedic injuries and conditions affect millions of patients every day around the world. Some of the top orthopedic injuries – tennis elbow, ACL tears, meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries and shoulder dislocations – are all treated by Dr. Nikhil Verma, knee surgeon and shoulder specialist serving the Chicago, Westchester, Oak Brook and Hinsdale, Illinois communities. Dr. Verma offers patients living in the greater Chicago area the latest in orthopedic stem cell therapy. He is also available to answer any questions a patient may have on uses of stem cells in orthopedic medicine.
How is Orthopedic Stem Cell Therapy Performed?
Dr. Verma utilizes autologous stem cells, otherwise known as adult stem cells, in his practice to accelerate healing of common orthopedic injuries and conditions. Adult stem cells are harvested from a patient’s own body to help reduce the risk of infection, disease transmission and tissue rejection. Since adult stem cells are found in a patient’s own body, it is not necessary to utilize the controversial and unethical embryonic or fetal stem cells.
Orthopedic stem cell therapy begins by Dr. Verma harvesting a bone marrow sample from the patient’s body, usually from the hip area. The sample is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the adult stem cells, platelets and white blood cells. Once these three healing agents are separated from red blood cells, Dr. Verma will inject the stem cells directly into the damaged area to accelerate regeneration and healing.

Can Stem Cell Therapy Help You?
There are two ways to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure:
You can provide current X-rays and/or MRIs for a clinical case review ($250).
You can schedule an office consultation that should be covered by your insurance.
What are the Most Common Uses of Stem Cells in Orthopedic Medicine?
Dr. Verma utilizes orthopedic stem cell therapy as a safe and potentially effective treatment option for patients affected by a sports injury or orthopedic condition. Common uses of stem cells in orthopedic medicine include:
- Healing soft tissues, such as ligaments and tendons
- Modulating the symptoms due to degeneration of joint articular cartilage
- Treating bone fractures
Stem cells are present in the human body at all times and have the ability to create new cells in healthy tissue, as well as to potentially regenerate tissue or facilitate healing when it becomes injured during athletic activities or from constant overuse. The uses of stem cells continue to evolve and expand in orthopedic medicine. Because of this, Dr. Verma offers orthopedic stem cell therapy to his patients and proud to be involved in the research and education of this cutting-edge biologic treatment.
